People are upset that a TV host called Sam Smith “he” and used the wrong gender pronouns several times.
Smith is one of the most famous artists of our time. His hit songs include “I’m Not the Only One,” “Stay with Me,” and “Dancing with a Stranger.”
Even though they have a lot of fans, they’ve been harshly criticized over the years. People didn’t like their “satanic” performance at the Grammys or the outfit they wore to the Brits.
People are now coming to the pop star’s defense after they were often misidentified as a man on TV.

Smith came out as non-binary in 2019 and said they like using they/them names.
The “Promises” singer wrote on social media, “I’ve decided to love myself for who I am, inside and out, after a lifetime of being at war with my gender.”
“I know there will be a lot of mistakes and wrong genders, but please try.” I hope you can see me the way I see myself now. “Thanks.”
They also said, “I’m not ready to speak eloquently about what it means to be non-binary yet, but I can’t wait for the day when I am.” Right now I just want to be AWARE and open.
Smith has been mistakenly labeled as a woman many times since coming out as non-binary.

Last year, the pop star went on The One Show in the U.K. and told Alex Jones she was wrong about their gender.
Smith told the Mirror, “I really enjoy fishing.” “I’d love to be a fisherman.”
Jones asked the singer if they meant a different kind of fishing. The singer replied, “I’d be any kind of fisher-them.” It’s all I want to do at the end of the day: fish.
At the Grammys, an Associated Press writer used the wrong names to talk about Smith when they were talking about how their style was changing.
As reported by The Independent, the writer said, “Sam Smith’s clothes have caused a lot of controversy this past year. I love that he’s continuing to break the mold and become different from the Sam Smith we knew in the ballads.”
“He’s still singing those ballads, but he’s certainly thrown himself into pop music, and we can tell from both his music and the way he looks.”

During a live episode on the daily TV show This Morning, Bob Geldof called Smith the wrong gender, and the show’s hosts were slammed for not correcting the mistake.
Reports from Pink News say that Geldof used he/him pronouns a lot when talking about the artist.
Smith talked about the problems that come with misgendering in a radio chat with Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s New Music Daily.
According to People, they said, “What’s hard is getting people to change their words; that’s very, very hard.” It takes time. Everyone does bad things. It’s going to be wrong for me until the day I die.
“People will remember not to use gender in their words for a very long time.”

The Australian news source The Project asked Smith to explain further: “It’s like, ‘It’s okay, but it’s important,’ you know?”
“All I can say is that it makes me feel great when people use my pronouns correctly.” I am safe, happy, and know that I am fully seen.
Trans Equality supporters say that to show respect, people should use the name and terms that a non-binary person asks for, not judge someone based on how they look, and back policies that help non-binary people, especially in places like bathrooms that are usually for men or women.

One time Smith was mistakenly called a man happened soon after their red carpet showing at the Barbie movie.
A lot of celebrities dressed like Barbies for the event, but Smith chose a more casual look by wearing a black hoodie that was too big on her and light blue pants with big flares.
Lorraine Kelly talked about the outfit on her talk show with Vogue Williams as a guest. Several times, she mistook Smith for someone else.
She said, “Oh, he’s dressed down,” and “That’s a bit big for him.” I would tell my son, “Son, that was a bit big for you.” “Bless him, he looks like the little shrinking man.”
Williams, an Irish model and TV star, used Smith’s proper names when she said they would “certainly stand out on the red carpet.”

Kelly’s use of the wrong gender made fans of the singer and songwriter angry, and they slammed the TV show on social media.
“I guess Lorraine didn’t get the memo about Sam Smith and their chosen pronouns, awkward,” someone wrote on X, which used to be Twitter.
She used “him” as many times as she could in one line, said someone else.
“Not Lorraine calling Sam Smith the wrong gender over and over!” said a third.
“She’s usually pretty good with this stuff,” someone else said. Vogue looked like she was in pain!!! She seemed to stress THEY too so Lorraine would understand, but it didn’t work!! She’ll be mad that she got it wrong, for sure.
After the reaction, Kelly spoke out and replied to a critic. The person who sent the criticism has since deleted the tweet.
“Fair point,” she said. “Not at all on purpose, but I’ll take it into account. Thanks for letting me know about it,” she wrote, followed by a red heart emoji.
Fair comment Ollie. Not in the least intentional but will take on board – thanks for bringing to my attention ❤️ https://t.co/h3ISCdhdjs
