Cherrie Mahan disappeared on February 22, 1985, after getting off her school bus in front of her Pennsylvania home. Despite extensive investigations, Cherrie, now 47, has not been found.
Investigators had linked her disappearance to a 1976 Dodge van with a distinctive design featuring a skier on a mountain.
Pennsylvania State Police are now looking into a woman’s claim made on May 23 in the Memories of Cherrie Mahan Facebook group, asserting that she is Cherrie.
However, Cherrie’s mother, Janice McKinney, remains skeptical, noting that this isn’t the first time someone has falsely claimed to be her daughter. In fact, this is the fourth instance.
Speaking to the Butler Eagle, Janice expressed disbelief, stating, “It did not look anything like Cherrie at all.” She condemned the woman’s actions, saying, “If you wanted your 15 minutes of fame, you’ve already blown it.”
The Facebook post has since been deleted, but Janice is no stranger to such claims, particularly around the anniversaries of Cherrie’s disappearance. She mentioned that February and August usually see an increase in such claims, but this recent one struck her differently.
Despite the lack of leads in Cherrie’s case, Janice maintains a sense of hope, believing that her daughter is safe, whether alive or in heaven.
Nevertheless, she continues to search for closure, hoping that investigators can collaborate and uncover any overlooked details. Janice remains convinced that someone out there holds the key to resolving Cherrie’s disappearance.
